Meridian Reflexology is based on the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)
and Japanese Zen Shiatsu approach to health.
Meridian
Reflexology uses the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) concept of meridian
energy pathways in the body. These are also represented on the feet. The five elements of the Chinese approach are
Earth, Water, Fire, Metal and Wood.
There are 12 'classical' meridians in the body, which also have channels on
the feet (based on the Zen Shiatsu approach of Shizuto
Masunaga). Each of the meridians is either Yin or Yang and relates to one of the
five elements. All of the meridians are
linked together as if in a 'network' through the body, and energy or 'chi' is
said to flow through them. An imbalance or blockage of chi in one
meridian will upset the balance of all of the others.
In Meridian Reflexology the reflexologist corrects imbalances in the body's
energy system by working the meridian lines on the feet, not the usual foot
reflexes. The Meridian Reflexology approach follows the classic approach to
Reflexology in that the feet are seen as mirroring the whole body. By working on the
parts of the meridians found on the feet the reflexologist aims to rebalance the
whole body.
Meridian Reflexology is a
complete treatment in itself, but I usually Meridian Reflexology in combination
with Precision Reflexology. I work on specific meridians, and acupressure points, as indicated.
Benefits of Meridian Reflexology
- The
main benefits are as the same as shown under the main
Reflexology page.
- Re-balances your energy body, and aids detoxification.
- Is an extremely relaxing and gentle treatment suitable for all.
What to expect from a Meridian Reflexology treatment
Meridian Reflexology is available at my therapy room at Mirasol in Exmouth,
East Devon. The treatment is extremely gentle involving gentle relaxation and then gentle
finger pressures along the meridian lines. You may feel sleepy or floaty. This
is fine. I will stop at various points along the meridians on your feet if an
imbalance is discovered, before moving on to the next point. I may also work a
few acupressure points on the feet if this is indicated. At the end I will
use relaxation techniques to relax your feet. By this time you should be
feeling very calm and relaxed!
- How many treatments are needed?
Top
-
- This depends on how you respond to the treatment as an individual. An individual treatment plan is agreed with you at the
end of the first session.
Often four sessions with a review after the fourth treatment is suggested,
but if you have a chronic or serious condition to be treated (with medical
permission) six or eight sessions may be more realistic. Many clients then
come back on a regular basis for top-up treatments. This could be twice a
month, once a month or maybe once every three months. Sometimes you may feel
that you don't need treatment for six months or so, but then return for
another four sessions. It may be that you simply want the occasional
treatment for rebalancing. This is entirely up to you and what you think you
might need.
-
- I've heard that sometimes you can feel worse after Reflexology?
-
- This can happen occasionally. A temporary worsening of symptoms may be
experienced after treatment. You may experience a headache or 'flu-like'
symptoms for up to 48 hours after treatment. If you feel worse you may think
that the treatment is not working, but this type of reaction in fact means
that the treatment is indeed working and helping the body to rid itself of
toxins and impurities.

To assist this in this cleansing process you can help by:
- Drinking plenty of water, juices and herbal teas
- Avoiding alcohol, coffee, tea or other stimulants during this time
- Cutting down or stopping smoking altogether
- Taking a rest or nap to help the body recover more quickly
- Eating a light diet with plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables and
avoiding "junk" or highly processed foods

- The fee for a Reflexology session is £35. The initial consultation
is free of charge.
Half-hour 'Relax
and Unwind' de-stressing Reflexology sessions are also available at £20.
