Healing has ancient roots. It dates back to the beginning of written history - around 5,000 years BC.

Healing (often also known as Energy Balancing) encourages the innate self-healing abilities of the person being healed on all levels - Mind, Body and Spirit. Healing energy is activated by the intention of the healer who attunes to both the person to be healed and the universal healing energies all around us (just like Reiki healers).

Healers usually spend at least two years as probationer healers developing their abilities through meditation, personal spiritual development and healing practice before they can be assessed and registered. Reiki is just the Japanese form of Healing and the effects and benefits are the same.

Healing does not require you to have any specific religious or spiritual beliefs, just an open mind and a willingness to relax and be open to all outcomes. Everyone benefits from Healing in some way or another, but as an individual you will respond in your own way. It helps if you are relaxed and comfortable with your healer and receptive to the healing energy. Healing sessions have a cumulative effect and although some people have a noticeable response after one session, others may need several sessions. A long-standing problem will not necessarily disappear overnight!

Healing is complementary to medical treatment, not an alternative. It is safe to receive healing at the same time as being treated by a GP or medical specialist. You should continue to see your medical practitioner if you they are already treating you for a specific condition, but it would be courteous to mention that you are also receiving healing. Explain to your GP or specialist that it helps to stimulate the self-healing abilities of the body and does not interfere with medical treatment. Don't stop taking your prescribed medication without the advice of your GP. Healers will always ask at your first session whether you have consulted your GP if you have a serious medical condition.

Benefits of Healing

  • Helps to reduce pain
  • Helps to improve sleep
  • Can help with chronic conditions such as migraine, IBS, M E, Fibromyalgia, etc.
  • Helps with relaxation
  • Helps to reduce anxiety, tension and stress
  • Assists with wound healing
  • Assists clear-thinking, decision-making and problem-solving
  • Can improve the quality of life for the terminally ill
  • Can help reduce the symptoms of many other diseases or conditions
  • Assists your body's own self-healing mechanisms

I have found that those suffering from bereavement are particularly comforted by healing, and have recently treated many people who have lost a loved one. Anxiety, stress and mild depression also respond extremely well to this most gentle of treatments.

How Does Healing Work?                                                                                                                                                                Top

During the healing session a healer opens their awareness to the universal energy (just like Reiki) and directs it to the client. The client receives the healing energy which flows through the healer, but does not come from the healer. A healer treats the whole person, not specific diseases, as the aim is to re-balance the energy of the client and allow the healing to take place. Healing often works on the spiritual, emotional and mental levels first with benefits being received on the physical level later - reducing pain, etc. Many people describe it as like having their battery recharged!

What to expect from a Healing session

A healing session from me will usually take place at my therapy room at Mirasol in Exmouth, East Devon, unless you are too ill and specifically request that I visit your home. I will travel to nearby towns and villages such as Lympstone, Exton, Ebford, Woodbury, Woodbury Salterton, Budleigh Salterton, Knowle, East Budleigh, etc. for an extra charge.

At your first session I will ask you to tell me your current medical or emotional concerns and a little about yourself in  general. This information is noted in a confidential client record which you are free to see at any time. Nobody else will have access to this record without your express permission. This initial consultation takes about 15 minutes.

I use a therapy couch for healing unless you prefer to sit in a chair. You will only be asked to remove your coat and shoes. I will ask your permission  before I touch you, and a treatment usually begins by placing my hands gently on your shoulders. The rest of the treatment is usually carried out with my hands away from your body, although I may occasionally touch your feet, an arm or a leg if I feel it is appropriate. The treatment is carried out in silence to enhance your relaxation. If you find it hard to relax at the beginning of the treatment I will talk you through a visualisation or body awareness relaxation exercise. The treatment will end with my hands on your shoulders.

Afterwards you will be offered a glass of water and given a chance to share with me your healing experience if you wish to do so.

Healers do not diagnose, claim to cure or use any body manipulation, except gentle relaxation of the neck and shoulders if needed, unless they are qualified in other therapies.

What Will You Feel During the Healing Session?

This varies from person to person but is similar to what you might feel if you receive Reiki. Most people experience a deep relaxation and sense of calm and well-being. You may feel a mild tingling sensation or warmth, coolness, mild pressure or other gentle sensations. Sometimes there is an initial worsening of pain which then disperses as the healing energy gets to work. Occasionally people fall asleep as they let go of all tension and relax completely. Your body will draw in as much healing energy as it needs and this will automatically go to where it is needed most. This does not involve any conscious effort on your part. Your job is to relax, keep an open mind and enjoy the experience.

Healing can benefit you in unexpected ways as it seeks out the underlying cause of your problems. The outcome of a healing session may not be apparent straight away as the healing continues after your treatment has finished. You may find that you become a little emotional as balance is restored on many levels. This will pass and leave you feeling calm and relaxed.

How Many Sessions Should You Have?

This will vary from person to person depending on how you respond to the treatment though it is usual to have four to six weekly or twice-weekly treatments to start with. After that we can review your treatment and you might decide to come back for the occasional 'top-up' as required. If you have a long-standing chronic problem this can take longer. Do not give up after only a few sessions as it is rare for people not to experience benefits from healing on some level.
